IL-05 Goes to Quigley

It's official Cook County Commissioner Quigley has won IL-05, Emanuel's former District. He was endorsed by both the Sun Times and Tribune, so, I'd find it rather unsurprising if he got a bit more positive coverage than anyone else. But, as I said before, no candidate actually got much coverage in the local news.

According to the Sun Times it was "voter rebellion" that won Quigley the seat. Apparently, "the Machine," i.e. the Democratic Party Machine, has controlled IL-05 since 1958 in all but one prior election. I guess that speaks volumes about what type of person is Emanuel (note: the only time IL-05 wasn't under the Democratic Party Machine was the one election a Republican, Michael Flanagan, won during the 'Republican Revolution' of 1994).

The Sun Times thinks that "if Quigley wins again next month, the same ward bosses he humiliated in this election will still get to pick his County Board replacement."

The Tribune does a nice breakdown of the results, noting who won what ward but it is their numerical breakdown which is far more informative:

Only about 1 in 6 voters cast a ballot yesterday and April 7th's turnout doesn't look much better. Nevertheless, Quigley is expected to win in April. Hopefully, soon-to-be-Congressman Quigley is actually a reformer and helps break the Machine's hold on IL-05.
